Running and Maintaining Medisoft version 5.44

THE FOLLOWING NOTICE HAS BEEN CANCELLED WITH THE RELEASE OF MEDISOFT 6.1

UPGRADING TO VERSION 6.1 IS NOW A RECOMMENDED ACTION...........

CANCELLED NOTICE: To successfully run 5.44 multi-user SafeMed Systems has found it is necessary to run the following steps.

If you are running Medisoft version 5.44 multi-user do not upgrade (stay where you are).  The current version of Medisoft is 5.66 (with three releases beyond 5.44).  With extreme guideline conditions you may upgrade to 5.65 client/server and/or 5.65 single user. However, don't go near any version of 5.66 or 5.65 multi-user. 5.66 is purported to "half-heartedly" handle multi-user but don't touch it until the next release and then for at least 4 weeks thereafter till all the facts are known about it.  NOTE: if you use ODBC driver interfaces, MS Access, Crystal Reports, etc. to manage your data do not upgrade to the 32 bit system for any reason.

Please print this stuff out.  Do first off before anything else:

1). Turn off "write behind caching". Right click "my computer", left click "properties", select the "performance" tab at the top of that window, click the "file system" button, click "troubleshooting" tab, and finally check the "disable write behind caching for all drives".

2) Modify the Borland database engine configuration by increasing "maxfilehandles" to maxfilehandles=144. To do this go to IDAPI folder (on your system drive) and double click "bdecfg.exe". Goto the "system" tab at bottom of that window and change "maxfilehandles to equal "144". Then file, save, file, exit.

3) If you modify "maxfilehandles" you must also increase the "files=" statement in the "config.sys" file which is found in the root directory as follows: go to the MSDos prompt: start, programs, msdos, then enter ".." (that is two periods) and hit enter which takes you to the root directory. Then enter "edit config.sys" which opens the system configuration file. You must either modify the existing "files=" statement or add it to read "files=255". Enter this command on a line by itself. "Files=255" is the signal for windows to maximize the files open command.

When you get various operating errors and such. To repair after these error messages:

Note: probably the most important "feature" of Microsoft win9x is that it remembers tons of error message "problems" even though they might not be so.  So each workstation receiving the error message and also including the server must be rebooted to allow win9x to "forget" about the error message problem.

Also, you must delete two types of files if and when they are created by Medisoft which is trying to save your data.  However, Medisoft after being improperly exited does not delete the files for you so you must do so.  Do "finds" (shown in 1 and 2 below) for two types of file extensions (make sure you are "looking in" "my computer").  You can save your searches to the desktop to make it easier to find them by choosing file, save search from the find window after successfully determining you have entered good search criteria.

1) Remove the file lock control file(s) from each workstation and the server (which end with "LCK".... delete all or any of them by start, find, files and folders and enter "Pdox*.Lck"

2) Then find "pdox*.net" and delete any and all found anywhere on the network or system

Daily Maintenance: (see note for how to create the batch file cleanup shortcut)

1). Run the cleanup batch file which can be found on the next to the top line of the following website: download and save to your Mediwin "data" folder (or wherever you have your data) you can make a shortcut to run this batch file also--name it "step one") medinterests.htm  These referenced files are created each time you create the appointment lists ... however, the system does not delete them each time the program is closed.  They can amass to thousands of database files (and each has an index) which overwhelms the Borland and Paradox system.  Cleanup batch file

2). Create a shortcut icon to "filem.exe" which is located in your Mediwin folder and name it "Step 1, 2, 3, and 4" (repeat it four different times and each individual time run as follows in the exact following order -- : a. pack all files b. recalculate all patient balances c. reindex all files d. rebuild all files.

3) then run "mvalutil.exe": Create a shortcut icon to run  "mvalutil.exe" within the mediwin folder... just double click it (run every other day or at least once a week)

This is the complete treatment!
